Communication Competence

Communication Competence: this theory describes the ability to choose a proper manner to communicate given the context one finds himself or herself in. One must have three things in order to communicate effectively in a given situation: the skills to do so, meaning simply the ability to know which communication behavior to use; the motivation to communicate his or her views effectively, and the knowledge of how to conduct oneself appropriately in the given context.

This in itself is not a communication theory, but it rather describes how an individual is able to communicate effectively and appropriately in any social situation or context (uky.edu).
