Marshall McLuhan

Born: July 21, 1911

Died: December 31, 1980

v  Was the director of the Center for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto.

v  Became famous and well known for his theories on media culture.

v  McLuhan focused on how the messages we send are greatly impacted by the delivery. If the context is destroyed by the channel, then “what” we say is not very important, but only how we say it is important (regent.edu).

v  McLuhan argued that written print fragmented society because it gave people the opportunity to read alone and be away from everybody else (regent.edu).

v  He saw that electronic media had the opportunity to come back to a collective way to perceive the world (regent.edu).

v  He is well known for his two theories:

1.The medium is the message


2.Global Village- presented the idea of the ability of electronic media to bring people together


v  Also well known for his Hot and Cool categories

v  Most of his work is based on trying to understand the effects of technology as it is related to popular culture, and how it is applied to human beings and their relationships with one another (leader.com)
